4 Cervical Decompression Exercises for Lasting Neck Pain Relief (Without Surgery)
While basic home stretches provide temporary relief, our clinical Cervical Dorsal Series utilizes targeted precision to permanently correct neck pain.
St. Paul Chiropractic & Natural Medicine Center’s spinal decompression exercises use the natural power of traction and gravity to gently elongate the spine. Watch our guided medical videos below to ensure your setup and equipment placement are exact.
"NOTE: You should identify the underlying root cause of your pain before attempting decompression exercises on your own so you don't worsen a severe injury. Specific positioning will be determined by your provider."
Your local St Paul Chiropractor can help with persistent neck pain.
By creating vital space between your vertebrae, these movements relieve painful, localized pressure on bulging or herniated discs and compressed nerves in the neck—allowing you to heal naturally without invasive surgery.
Don't Let Neck Pain Leave You Immobile
High-risk spinal fusions and surgeries aren't your only options. Schedule your comprehensive cervical evaluation at St. Paul Chiropractic & Natural Medicine Center today and take the first step toward lasting, natural relief. How Decompression Helps You Avoid Neck Surgery
When your cervical spine is compressed, discs lose their cushioning, leading to pinched nerves, chronic stiffness, and radiating shoulder pain. Decompression exercises naturally reverse this pressure. By combining strategic, targeted movements with core stabilization, many chiropractic patients successfully avoid high-risk surgeries like cervical fusions or laminectomies.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: You should identify the underlying root cause of your pain before attempting decompression exercises on your own so you don’t worsen a severe injury.
Part 1: Baseline Traction Stretch
Before introducing orthopedic equipment, start with this gentle, non-invasive baseline exercise to relax the deep muscle layers of the cervical spine.
1. Gentle Decompression Prep (Insert: Cervical Traction.MOV)This introductory movement helps to safely expand the joint spaces in the neck, preparing your spine for advanced clinical corrective exercises.
Part 2: Advanced Clinical Decompression Exercises (Video Guided)
While basic stretching offers temporary relief, true structural correction requires precision. Our clinical Cervical Dorsal (CD) Series utilizes orthopedic foam fulcrums to systematically restore the natural curve of your neck and spine.
What is a Spinal Fulcrum?
In spinal rehabilitation and exercise, a fulcrum acts as a localized pivot point, wedge, or support placed under a specific part of your back or neck. It is used to passively restore natural spinal curves or to challenge core stability during strength training by utilizing the natural weight of your body and gravity.
Watch the guided setup video below to ensure your posture and equipment placement are exact.

Setup and Positioning for the CD Series
- The Neck: Place the cervical fulcrum directly under your neck, as close to the top of your shoulders as possible.
- The Lower Back: Lying flat on your back with your knees bent, position the low-back fulcrum (P-wedge) posteriorly. Align it with your belly button for anterior weight-bearing, slightly higher, aligned with your bottom rib, for posterior weight bearing.
- The Hands: Rest your palms flat on your thighs, applying light, and stabilizing pressure.
2. The CD1 Linear Head Press
How to do the CD1 neck exercise:
- Lying in your setup position, press the back of your head directly down into the foam fulcrum, as if you are trying to look at the wall safely behind you.
- Hold for 10 seconds, then release.
- Repeat for 5 repetitions.
3. The CD2 Lateral Resistance Press
How to do the CD2 neck exercise:
- Gently turn your head to the left, pressing your ear toward the fulcrum to create resistance.
- Pause for 10 seconds, return to center, and repeat on the right side.
- Complete 5 sets to relieve unilateral pinched nerves.
4. The CD3 Diagonal Traction Release
How to do the CD3 neck exercise:
- Move your head in an upward diagonal motion.
- Press firmly into the corner of the fulcrum as if trying to look at the top corner of the room.
- Repeat on the opposite side to unlock deep rotation restrictions.

Cervical Conditions This Protocol Helps Treat
Cervical decompression is a highly effective, conservative treatment protocol for a wide variety of upper spinal misalignments, including:
- Herniated or Bulging Discs: Reduces internal disc pressure to allow herniations to retract.
- Sciatica Nerve Pain: Relieves the radiating leg pain caused by a pinched sciatic nerve.
- Spinal Stenosis: Creates space in a narrowed spinal canal to alleviate nerve crowding.
- Degenerative Disc Disease: Rehydrates worn-down spinal discs by promoting nutrient flow.
- Facet Joint Syndrome: Reduces friction and inflammation in the spine's guiding joints.
- Chronic Arthritis Pain: Restores mobility to stiff, arthritic vertebrae.
Is Decompression Alone Enough for Neck Pain Relief (Without Surgery)?
While most patients experience significant neck pain reduction and a massive boost in mobility, decompression exercises work best as part of a comprehensive care plan.
To achieve lasting, permanent relief, these home movements are typically paired with targeted in-office chiropractic adjustments to strengthen the surrounding support muscles and keep the spine perfectly aligned.Don't let your neck pain become a chronic condition
